Nora Ephron- “It will be a little messy, but embrace the mess. It will be complicated. But rejoice in the complications. It will not be anything like you think it will be like, but surprises are good for you. And don’t be frightened: you can always change your mind. I know: I’ve had four careers and three husbands.”
One of my favorite quotes because it’s so true on so many levels. Embrace the mess. Appreciate complexities. Change your thinking to idea that surprises can be a good thing and bring about changes. No reason to fear anything because we control nothing except for our reactions. Life is not a guaranteed smooth ride yet a majority of us believe on many levels that we have a say in what happens to us, around us, or because of us. Haven’t we all heard the statement that “what will happen, will happen. We can only control how we react and respond…”
Life is about change and the sooner we can all embrace this and let go of the incessant need to have control over everything, the easier life becomes to manage and emotions seem to flow at an easier rate. Less ego, more breathing and mindfulness of why the event has happened in an effort to let it go as quickly as it came into being. That is the true wisdom of experience.
All forms of change depend upon different time schedules, demands, and repeat cycles. Nothing about life is guaranteed or fair and yet the hits keep on coming no matter the feelings, needs for breaks, or because it’s been deemed that we have had enough or learned our lessons. Working in a high pressure job, with demanding tasks and deadlines, only increases the need for perfection and desire to please all on many levels: your boss, your team, the other groups that depend upon you, etc. All eyes are on you: as a role model, as an example, as a barometer of stress, an indicator of successes or failures.
For all those reasons, and so many more, being true in your authentic approach denotes how well you manage emotions, reactions, and surprises all the while continue to hold your head high and with a feeling of accomplishment and pride. Invest in working through the negative in order to stay within the positive for the rate of change on so much is too much and a huge burden to carry around. A positive mindset and graciousness carry a stronger force than any fear or negative thoughts could ever influence.
Remember- this will pass but folks remember how you reacted instead of why you reacted. Be mindful in working through change.
